Spotlight on: IDNs

On February 21, we celebrated International Mother Language Day, a day created by UNESCO and the United Nations to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism.

Linguistic diversity has become an important topic in the domain industry with the introduction of internationalized domain names (IDNs). Over 50% of the Internet is in English - a number that does not reflect the distribution of (native) languages around the world. IDNs allow for the “translation” of domain names into different languages and scripts, expanding linguistic diversity online so companies can target more people in their native language.
