**Renewal dates and times: a quick refresher**
Feeling confused about renewal dates and times, and why there is sometimes a discrepancy between the date in our panel and on the WHOIS?
This is how it works:
Take the **.es**domain as an example. You might check the WHOIS information instead of the Openprovider panel and see an expiration date of 22-06-2025 for their .es domain. However, the renewal date at Openprovider is listed as 16-06-2025 09:28:34 - as the [**renewal date offset**](https://openprovider.help/books/quick-start/page/renewal-policies-in-openprovider) for **.es** is 6 days. This will lead the domain to expire on June 16th, not June 22nd.
You can find more information on the renewal policies for each TLD in the “Documentation per TLD” section of our [Knowledge Base](https://support.openprovider.eu/hc/en-us/categories/360002471613-Domains).
Keep in mind that the hour also matters - in this case, the domain would expire on 09:28:34, meaning that you should renew it before this time!

**DNS updates for .it**
The**.it**registry requires nameservers to be correctly configured and fully operational **before** you submit a domain registration or DNS update. This means the zone and all necessary records must already be set up in advance.
If the nameservers are not properly configured, the registry will place the domain on hold and may delete it after a certain period.
**Important notes:**
- An **MX record must be present**.
- You cannot use **two or more nameservers with the same IP address**.
DNS changes are processed in real time, but it may take **6 to 12 hours** for WHOIS to reflect the update.
You can use the [registry’s tool](https://www.nic.it/en/manage-your-it/dns-check) to check your DNS configuration.
**Why is my .it domain showing “pendingUpdate”?**
When a domain is in *pendingUpdate* status, it means the new DNS configuration is still being validated by the registry. This status can last for up to **5 days**.
If the DNS configuration is not successfully validated within that time, the update is cancelled and the domain reverts to its previous state.
During this period, the registry automatically performs DNS checks:
- Immediately after each DNS change request
- Every 30 minutes, until the 5-day *pendingUpdate* window ends

The [Q2 DNIB](https://www.dnib.com/articles/the-domain-name-industry-brief-q1-2025) was released recently and shows a picture of steady growth across the full domain industry. Total domain registrations reached **371.7 million worldwide**, up 0.9% from Q1 and 2.6% year over year.
After several quarters of decline,**.com** is showing growth again, climbing to 157.9 million total registrations. Besides a growth in new registrations, the average renewal rate of**.com** and**.net** also rose to **75.5%**, helping drive the overall growth of these two traditional domains on the Internet.
**New gTLDs** saw the strongest growth, up 4.6% from Q1 to 39.5 million registrations, and 14.2% year over year, although renewal rates remain on the lower side at 32.5%. Interestingly, a recent [report](https://www.identity.digital/newsroom/the-rise-of-non-traditional-domains-in-tech-startups) from registry Identity Digital also mentioned that non-traditional domains are firmly on the rise - less than 50% of startups use a **.com** domain in 2025! The hottest options here include**.ai**, **.io**, **.pro**,**.info**, and**.global**.
In terms of numbers, the top TLDs in Q2 of 2025 overall were .com,**.cn**,**.de**, **.net**, **.org**, **.uk**, **.ru**, **.nl**, **.br**, and **.xyz**, showing a wide mix of legacy, country-code, and newer extensions.

**What is an administrative contact for .ie?**
One of the most common issues when registering a **.ie** domain is not following the registry’s contact policy, which can cause delays.
The **.ie r**egistry requires the registrant to appoint one or more named individuals as **administrative contacts**. These contacts act as the registrant’s nominated representatives. The registrant and admin contact **must not** be the same person.
At Openprovider, this means using **different contact handles** for the owner and the admin contact.
If the same handle is used for both, it can trigger multiple errors at the registry. While we plan to add a safeguard to prevent this, it’s important to keep this in mind to avoid registration issues.
**What are .ie charity domains?**
The .ie registry waives registration and renewal fees for all charities registered in Ireland.

I can’t transfer out my .uk domain due to the error “Action status prohibited while transfer out”. What should I do?
Unlock the domain in the control panel by clicking the lock icon in the top-right corner, then update the IPS tag.
My .se / .nu domain remains in serverHold status, what should I do?
Clone the current handle with the correct info and sync the domain using the new contact handle.
When transferring a .co domain to Openprovider, it remains in status REQ (requested). However, it shows Openprovider (registrar.eu) in the Whois. What should I do?
Contact our [support team](https://www.openprovider.com/company/contact-us), and we will finish the transfer for you.
When I try to register a .be domain, I see an error saying “Invalid owner handle! Invalid phone number” in the domain owner details. What should I do?
This means that there is a mistake in the format of the phone number. Always use the format provided by the registry (regular expression) when entering the phone number and postal code.

Last month, we released a new version of our **WHMCS domain registrar module** that includes the **Consent to Publish Domain Contact Data option for gTLDs**. This option is now available on the domain registration, transfer, and modification pages in the WHMCS Admin Area.
By default, personal data is redacted to protect registrants’ privacy in line with GDPR.
If registrants want their contact details to appear in public WHOIS/RDAP, they must now give explicit consent.

How to keep domain data up to date under NIS2 using bulk operations
The new NIS2 Directive is changing how domain data must be managed across the EU. For resellers, that means keeping contact information accurate and up to date is now a compliance requirement. Outdated details could even lead to **domain suspension** or **transfer delays.**

**1. Why should I transfer domains to Openprovider?**
As a Member, you get registrations, renewals, and transfers for 1,900+ TLDs at registry wholesale pricing. No markups, no surprises. You get to manage your full domain portfolio in one place and save money long-term.
**2. Will my website or email stop working during the transfer?**
No. Your domain's nameservers stay the same, so your site and email won’t be affected.
**3. How long does a bulk transfer take?**
Usually 5-15 days, depending on the TLD and the type of transfer.
Some take longer if we need help from your current provider.
**4. Will my domain expiration date change?**
It depends.
- Registry bulk transfers: expiration dates stay the same.
- Standard transfers: most TLDs add 1 year to the expiration date.

**5. Why do bulk transfers fail?**
Failures are not common - but if they happen, it’s usually because of one of these:
- The domain is locked
- The auth code is wrong
- The TLD contract is missing
- Your account doesn’t have enough funds
- The CSV file format was changed

We’ve released a new version of our **WHMCS domain registrar module** that includes the **Consent to Publish Domain Contact Data option for gTLDs**. This option is now available on the domain registration, transfer, and modification pages in the WHMCS Admin Area.
By default, personal data is redacted to protect registrants’ privacy in line with GDPR.
If registrants want their contact details to appear in public WHOIS/RDAP, they must now give explicit consent.

We are excited to announce that the [latest version (v5.9.0)](https://github.com/openprovider/Openprovider-WHMCS-domains/releases/tag/v5.9.0) of our WHMCS domains module is now live.
This is our biggest WHMCS module upgrade yet. Here are some of the standout updates:
- PHP 8.3 support.
- (Experimental) Bash scripts for one-step installation and upgrade of the module.
- Per-domain sync button in the WHMCS Admin area.
- Enhanced Openprovider widget with module version and update check, plus a single function that shows available balance.
- Support for .fi, .ae, .eu, and .es (.es ANNEX III registrant Acceptance) additional fields.
- Renewal date sync to WHMCS with WHMCS native domain sync to avoid mismatched dates caused by renewal offsets.

### Openprovider is now accredited for .ro
|
Good news: Openprovider has achieved direct accreditation status with the **.ro** registry. This means significantly lower prices and improved service for you and your customers!
Starting December 16, 2025, new registrations for .ro and all 3rd-level .ro domains will be just €6/year for Members (down from €21). Hosting Concepts B.V. will appear as the registrar in WHOIS records
Please note that existing .ro domains remain with our previous supplier and will continue to be billed at the current (old) pricing. We’re currently coordinating the bulk transfer of these domains to Openprovider’s direct accreditation. This process involves specific formalities required by the registry and is taking slightly longer than expected. We’ll notify you as soon as we’re ready to begin the transfer and share the next steps.

### Important: New reseller responsibilities under NIS2 and local registry policies

To meet the requirements of the NIS2 Directive for European ccTLDs, national regulations (such as NIXI for .IN), and other registry-specific rules (including .BE and .US), we have strengthened our data validation and registrant identity verification processes. Our [published policies](https://www.openprovider.com/company/policies) have also been updated.

### Reminder: 2FA required from October 28th
|
Starting October 28th, two-factor authentication (2FA) will be mandatory for all Openprovider accounts to enhance security.
Enabling 2FA takes just 2 minutes. If you haven’t yet, please [activate it now](https://cp.openprovider.eu/signin) and download your backup codes to avoid any access issues later. To generate your login codes, you can use an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, Authy, or Duo.
If you have already enabled 2FA, please don’t forget to download your backup codes. They’re essential if you lose access to your authentication device. To get them, you can temporarily disable 2FA, re-enable it, and then download the codes through your authenticator app.
